Walks are where people fall
Almost every slip-and-fall happens on foot, not behind a wheel — at the entrance, on the accessible route, on the strip of concrete between the car and the door. We run dedicated sidewalk crews, separate from the plow trucks, because walks are a labor job with its own equipment, its own materials, and its own timing.
A separate crew, on purpose
A plow truck cannot clear a sidewalk, and a plow route schedule should not decide when your entrance gets safe. Our walk crews run their own routes in parallel with the trucks — shovels, snow blowers, and walk-behind spreaders — so entrances and accessible routes are clear when the lot is, not hours later.
Priority order is part of the scope: building entrances first, then ADA accessible routes and ramps, then connecting walks. Accessible routes are not optional extras — they are the paths your highest-risk visitors are required to use, and they are treated as first-class scope in every walk contract we write.
Concrete gets different chemistry
Rock salt that is fine on an asphalt lot scales and spalls concrete flatwork — especially concrete poured within the last year, which should see no chloride at all. Walk crews carry magnesium chloride blends and, where specified, chloride-free melt for new pours, pavers, and decorative concrete. It costs more per pound and saves you a five-figure flatwork replacement.
Like everything else: geo-stamped clock-in, photos, checklist, every visit. Walk service is where 'we were there' disputes are most common — and where our proof system ends them fastest.

Straight answers
Are sidewalks included in a snow plowing contract?
Not automatically — walks are scoped and priced separately because they are labor-driven while plowing is equipment-driven. A plowing-only contract that is silent on walks means nobody is contractually responsible for the surface where people actually fall. We quote walks explicitly: which entrances, which routes, what trigger, what melt product.
When are sidewalks cleared relative to the parking lot?
In parallel, not after. Our walk crews run their own routes alongside the plow trucks, with building entrances and ADA accessible routes first. On overnight storms both the lot and the primary walks are targeted for completion before business open.
What ice melt is safe for new concrete?
Concrete less than about a year old should get no chloride de-icer at all — use plain traction grit or a chloride-free melt. For cured concrete walks, magnesium chloride blends are significantly gentler than rock salt. If a vendor is throwing bulk rock salt on your entrance flatwork, budget for scaling repairs.
